On another day of our wanderings in eastern Slovakia, we set out for the lake called Morské oko. Since it was a relatively short hike, we added another destination - the Sninský kameň towering above Morské oko.

jazero Morské oko

Morské oko is the third largest natural lake in Slovakia and has a volcanic origin. It is located in the Vihorlat Mountains and is considered one of the most beautiful landscapes in Slovakia. If you enjoy the sight of a romantic lake surrounded by wooden benches and dense forest, it's definitely worth a visit. If you venture a bit higher, you'll come across a historic mansion from the first half of the last century, adding to the breathtaking atmosphere. It is state-owned, and according to information on the website, there is also an opportunity for accommodation.

After a brief admiration of the beautiful natural scenery, we continued our journey. On the way to Sninský kameň, you have two options. You can either take the blue trail straight up or extend it a bit by taking the yellow trail. As a reward, you'll see Malé Morské oko lake, a bit hidden from most tourists. We chose the second option and, in addition to the lake, enjoyed an undisturbed path. On the yellow trail, we ascended gently to Jedlinka and then descended a bit to the saddle Tri table, from where we continued climbing until we reached the base of Sninský kameň. The trail is divided into segments by individual intersections every half an hour, making the journey pass quickly. In the final phase of the trip, you'll face the last challenge - "climbing" up iron stairs. But don't worry, children, parents with newborns, and even a pregnant woman (that's me) managed it, so anyone with a bit of courage can handle it. At the top, you'll enjoy a well-deserved view not only of Morské oko but also of the beautiful Vihorlat forests and mountains, all at your fingertips.

For the return journey, we chose the shorter and steeper route, from the saddle Tri table on the blue trail down to the parking lot. I recommend this route mainly because of the gradual ascent on the yellow trail, which is quite steep on the blue trail. Therefore, it's better to choose the blue trail for the way back.

On the way, we encountered many hikers in light summer footwear, some with minimal water supply. However, I don't recommend this. It's definitely better to choose sturdy hiking shoes, which will be especially appreciated in the final phase of the path with the mentioned iron stairs. The surface is quite uneven, and since it goes through the forest, it is often damp. Also, do not underestimate the supply of fluids or a small snack, as there is no source of drinking water or a snack bar along the way. The snack bar is located on the north side of Morské oko, practically at the end of the hike and also a bit off the path. For information-hungry tourists, there is an educational trail round the lake.
